- The capital Tunis retains much of the French architecture and influence it obtained during France’s spell on North Africa, giving it a cosmopolitan feel reminiscent of many of the cities on the northern shore of the Mediterranean and its souk is a great place for a bargain.
- Heading further back in history you can still find some remarkable remains of the Roman Empire especially in the wonderfully preserved amphitheatre of El Djem. Ancient Carthage founded by the Phoenicians and immortalised by the Romans is long gone although you can still feel its presence at the site outside Tunis.
- Tunisia has long been marketed as a beach destination, and although it has great beaches, it also has some wonderful places steeped in history and culture waiting to be explored. Travel into the desert and experience life in the Sahara, the south of the country has some stunning scenery which is in dramatic contrast to the temperate north.
